Henry Grey, 3rd Earl Grey (1802-1894) served under his father as undersecretary for the colonies 1830-1833, resigning because the cabinet would not back the immediate emancipation of slaves; he was secretary of war 1835-1839, and colonial secretary 1846-1852.Short Biography:
He was unique among politicians of the period in maintaining that the colonies should be governed for their own benefit, not that of Britain, and in his policy of granting self-government wherever possible. Yet he advocated convict transportation, and was opposed to Gladstone's Home Rule policy.
