Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States. He was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri, USA.
Biography and Career:
He worked as Vice President with Franklin D. Roosevelt's as his third Vice President and succeeded as president on April 12, 1945 when President Roosevelt died less than three months after beginning his fourth term.
Truman remained Vice President only 82 days as President Roosevelt died. He had had very little meaningful communication with Roosevelt about world affairs or domestic politics but was elected as President in 1945 for the first term. In his presidency period US tested the world first Atomic Bomb. Truman was quickly briefed on the Manhattan Project and authorized use of atomic weapons against the Japanese in August 1945, as Japan
did not accept the Potsdam Declaration. The atomic bombings that followed were the first and also the last bombing so far instance of nuclear warfare.
The major achievements he got in his first term are economical revival of US after the world war, his role in United Nations and in cold war with Russia, Recognition of Israel and many others.
He was re-elected as President for 2nd term in 1949 to 1953.His second term was grueling in large measure because of foreign policy challenges connected directly or indirectly to his policy of containment. He quickly had to come to terms with the end of the American nuclear monopoly. With information provided by its espionage networks in the United States, the Soviet Union's atomic bomb project progressed much faster than had been expected and they exploded their first bomb on August 29, 1949. On January 7, 1953, Truman announced the detonation of the first U.S. hydrogen bomb to answer the Soviet Union. In his 2nd term he also accepted newly borne state Pakistan, now the 7th atomic power of the world.
On November 1, 1950, Puerto Rican nationalists Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo attempted to assassinate Truman at Blair House but the President remained safe in the attack. Harry S. Truman was died in December 26, 1972.
