Harlow Shapley Harlow Shapley (1885-1972) was an American astronomer, whose study of globular star clusters showed that they were arranged in a halo around the galaxy, and that the galaxy was much larger than previously thought.

He realized that the Sun was not at the centre of the galaxy as then assumed, but two thirds of the way out to the rim.
