Holbein was born in Augsburg. In 1515 he went to Basel, where he became friendly with Erasmus; in 1517 to Lucerne; he was active in Basel again (1519-1526).
Short Biography:
He designed title pages for Luther's New Testament and More's Utopia. Pronounced Renaissance influence emerged in the Meyer Madonna in 1526, a fine altarpiece in Darmstadt.
During his time at the English court, he also painted miniature portraits, inspiring Hilliard.
