Hafez al Assad
Hafez al Assad is an Syrian Ba'athist politician.
Short Biography:
He became prime minister after a bloodless military coup in 1970, and in 1971 was the first president of Syria to be elected by popular vote.
He was re-elected in 1978 and he is a Shia (Alawite) Muslim.
