Gregory Efimovich Rasputin (1871-1916) acquired influence over the tsarina Alexandra, wife of Nicholas II, because of her faith in his power to cure her son of his haemophilia, and he was able to make political and ecclesiastical appointments. Short Biography:
His abuse of power and his notorious debauchery (reputedly including the tsarina) led to his being murdered by a group of nobles, who (when poison had no effect) dumped him in the river Neva after shooting him.

Grigori Rasputin was a Siberian wandering "holy man", the illiterate son of a peasant.
