The Broadway star Peter Lockyer and she were school mates as they did their schooling together. Gretchen’s brother Jim is a director and film editor in Hollywood movies. Gretchen is a student of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
She is a graduate from William Esper Studio. For a short time in her life she even worked as an usher at the Angelika Film Centre. She was noticed by a talent agent when she was living in hell’s kitchen walk up. At that time she used to work as hat check girl in one of New York’s restaurant.
Gretchen started doing stage work at Vermont’s sum
mer stock theatre. She did various kinds of roles there. In one of plays called The Shape of Things she portrayed the role of a girl named Jenny which was appreciated by the critics. Later in 2003 she even appeared in the film’s version of the play. For a span of one year in 2004 she sang and danced in Broadway production of play, Chicago. Gretchen had even worked as a model in 1994. She was discovered by Davis Powell who was a photographer. He photographed her in black and white and upgraded her portfolio that gave her many top notch modeling jobs. However she quit modeling to become a full time actor. She has acted in as many as thirty movies.
Her TV career started when she appeared in a Coca-Cola commercial. She did small roles in TV serials like Dead Man’s Walk and Spin City. She was the main lead in Girls Club, which was a story about three lawyers. It could not capture attention of the audience and so it was cancelled after only two episodes. She appeared as Madge Owens in TV version of the Picnic and Lucy Morgan of The Magnificent Ambersons. Her most remarkable work was in The Valley of Light. The show was based on World War II novel written by Terry Kay.
Gretchen is married to Kip Williams who is a film director since June 2004. They had their first child in 2007 and are now expecting their second child in February 2011.
