Ginger Rogers was born on July 16, 1911. She was an American film and stage actress, dancer and singer.
Biography and Career
Rogers was born as Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Missouri. She was the daughter of William Eddins McMath, an electrical engineer from Scotland, and his wife Lela Emogene Owens. Her parents separated soon after her birth, and she and her mother went to live with her grandparents, Kansas City.
In 1929, Rogers made her debut in a trio of short films include: Night in the Dormitory, A Day of a Man of Affairs, and Campus Sweethearts.Later Rogers was chosen to star on Broadway in Girl Crazy by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin, the musical play widely considered to have made stars of both Ginger and Ethel Merman.
In 1930, she was signed by
Paramount Pictures to a seven-year contract, under which she had made films at Astoria Studios in Astoria, Queens and move with her mother to Hollywood. When she got to California, she signed a three picture deal with Pate, which resulted in three forgettable pictures.
In 1932, she landed singing and dancing and was named one of fifteen WAMPAS Baby Stars. She then made her screen breakthrough in the Warner Brothers film 42nd Street in 1933. She went on to make a series of films with RKO Radio Pictures and, in the second of those, Flying Down to Rio released in 1933.
Rogers was most famous for her partnership with Fred Astaire. Together, from 1933 to 1939, they made nine musical films at RKO Flying Down to Rio in 1933, The Gay Divorcee released in 1934, Roberta went on screen in 1935, Top Hat in 1935, Follow the Fleet in 1936, Swing Time in 1936, Shall We Dance in 1937, and Carefree in 1938, The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle in 1939 and a tenth The Barkleys of Broadway in 1949.
Rogers died in Rancho Mirage on April 25, 1995 of congestive heart failure at the age of 83. She was cremated; her ashes are interred in the Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Chatsworth, California.
