Gerald Grosvenor born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland is the son of Robert George Grosvenor, 5th Duke of Westminster and Hon. Viola Maud Lyttelton. When he was a child he lived on an Island in the middle of Lough Erne. Before he went to Sunningdale School and Harrow school he did his primary education in Northern Ireland.
After getting an O level he left the Harrow school. He also failed in the Royal Military Academy entrance examination at Sandhurst. In 1970 he joined the Territorial Army as a trooper.
In 1973 he went to Sandhurst and commanded the North Irish Horse, The Cheshire Yeomanry Squadron, founded
by his ancestors, and the "The Queen's Own Yeomanry". He was the Honorary Colonel of several Regiments including the 7th Regimen. He was also the Honorary Colonel for Army Air Corps, the Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry, the Queen's Own Yeomanry, Northumbria Universities Officer Training Corps, Colonel in Chief of the Canadian Royal Westminster Regiment, the North Irish Horse and Colonel Commandant Yeomanry.
He was given the post of Assistant Chief of Defense Staff with promotion as the Major General in 2004. Since the 1930 he was the first reservist to get such a rank. After serving in the Ministry of Defense for four years he handed over the responsibility to Major General Simon Lalor in March 2007. He became the chancellor of the University of Chester in 2005. According to the Sunday Times, Gerald Grosvenor is the third richest man in the world after Lakshmi Mittal and Roman Abramovich.
He is the richest property developer in Britain and one of Britain's largest landowners. He has vast estates in Lancashire, Cheshire and Scotland. He also owns estates in Canada and Spain.
