George Wald George Wald (1906-1997) found that a crucial role was played by the retinal pigment rhodopsin, derived in part from vitamin A.

For this he shared the 1967 Nobel Prize for Medicine with Ragnar Granit and Hal dan Hartline (1903-1983).
