George Bacovia (real name George Vasiliu) was born on September 17, 1881 in Bacau, Romania. He was a great Romanian poet.
Biography and Career :
He was the fifth of the 11 children of Dimitrie Vasiliu and Zoe Vasilui. His father was a merchant.
At the age of seven in 1888 "little Iorga" as they called him in the family got sick and couldn't go to school. Next year he attended the classes of Boys School in Bacau and graduated after five years with great results.
In 1898 he wrote a few poems like "It's Raining", "Sonnet", "Winter Picture", Pale", "Neurosis".
On the 20th of March 1899 was published in Macedonski's magazine his first poem wrote one year before, "And All". He signed the verses V. George. In the same year he finished gymnasium classes.

t to the Military School in Iasi in 1900 and because of the severe discipline he got out after a trimester.
The Gymnasium school in Bacau transformed itself in High-school and he had attended classes there from 1901. That was the year when he changed his name in Bacovia.
When he graduated in 1903 he went to the Law collage in Bucharest and entered the Cenacle of Alexandru Macedonski. At the end of the school year he quitted and stayed in Bucharest with his brother.
In 1907 George Bacovia went to the Law Collage in Iasi and he managed to finish it 1911 but didn't get a job as a lawyer. He was instead a teacher and because he got ill he quitted.
In 1915 appeared in Bacau New Horisonts magazine under his guidance and in 1916 was published the volume "Lead".
George Bacovia left to Bucharest in 1916 and in 1920 he was chief in the Work Ministry bureau. He got sick again and quitted.
At the end of the year 1922 he went to Bacau.
In 1923 he received a prize for volume "Lead" and in 1925 he and Grigore Tabacaru founded Cultural Athenaeum magazine. There were published in 1926 "Yellow Sparks" and "Pieces of Night".
George Bacovia got married to Agatha Grigorescu in 1928 and moved to Bucharest.
In 1930 appeared a new volume of poems "With You" and his bad health made him to go in a hospital for help. In November he went to Bacau with his wife where he would remain until 1933.
The family had a son on the 8th of November 1931 and in 1933 the poet decided to move for good in Bucharest.
In 1934 was published a volume of poems "Poems" and Bacovia won the National prize for Poetry.
He became friend with Cicerone Theodorescu and Eugen Jebeleanu while he was librarian in Ministry of Petroleum and Mines in 1945.
One year after in 1946 was published a volume of poems "Bourgeois Stanza" . George Bacovia is celebrated and recognized as a great poet in Bacau in 1947.
In December 1955 he received a honor pension.
On the 22nd of May 1957 in Bucharest
, George Bacovia passed away after a great pain.
