Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Phillip Cantor (1845-1918) was a German mathematician, born in Russia.
Why is Georg Cantor famous?
He developed a rigorous and consistent theory of infinite numbers ("transfinite" in his terminology), strongly opposed by Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891).
This was part of a broader theory of sets, which has permeated most of modern mathematics. He taught at the University of Halle, Germany 1869-1905.
Why is Georg Cantor famous?
Georg Cantor as the inventor of set theory, which has become a fundamental theory in mathematics.
