Gene Hackman (full name Eugene Allen Hackman) was born on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California. During his childhood, he moved a number of homes with his family until settling in Danville, Illinois. His parents split in 1943 and he entered the US Marine Corps when he was only 16 years old.
Returning from the Corps, he shifted to New York City and after spending a few years there, he began to develop an acting career. So, he moved to California and was signed up by Pasadena Playhouse. During this time, he also befriended Dustin Hoffman.
When the two couldn't find worthwhile works in California, they relocated to NYC and acted in a number of off-Broadway productions. Gene Hackman also appeared in small roles in movies like Lilith (1964). His first hit movie was Bonnie and Cl
yde (1967) and he received a nominator for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.
Throughout the early 1970s, he appeared in hit movies like The French Connection, The Poseidon Adventure and Young Frankenstein. In 1978, he was cast in the character of Lex Luthor in the movie Superman and then he did the same role in Superman II (1980). This was followed by a number of flop movies until Hoosiers (1986) and No Way Out (1987).
This was followed by his role in the movie Unforgiven (1992) for which he received an Oscar. After this, he appeared in high profile movies like The Firm, Get Shorty, Enemy of the State. Despite of the success, Gene Hackman has actually retired from movies after his sting in the film Welcome to Mooseport (2004).
