Gary Leonard Oldman was born on 21 March, 1958, in New Cross, London, England. He is an English actor and filmmaker.
Oldman stated that his father was an abusive alcoholic who left his family when he was only seven. Although he was an accomplished singer and pianist as a child, Oldman gave up music to pursue an acting career. He had Malcolm McDowell’s performance as inspiration in 1970 movie The Raging Moon. He attended South East London Boy’s School on Creek Road in Deptford, leaving school at 16.
Oldman spent almost eight years in theatre, winning a number of awards, after graduating from BA
in Directing at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, Kent in 1979. He won his first role in 1986 as the Sex Pistols’ill-fated bassest Sid Vicious in the 1986 motion picture Sid & Nancy. His performance was ranked #8 in Uncut magazine’s “10 Best actors in rockin’ roles” and #62 in Premiere magazine’s “100 Greatest Performances of All Time”. Oldman was becoming an established Hollywood film actor in the 1980s.
In 1991, he starred in the most significant role of his career until then, as Lee Harvey Oswald in Oliver Stone’s JFK. He then starred as Count Dracule in Francis Ford Coppola’s romance-horror Dracula.
Since the year 2000, Oldman appeared in many great productions. In 2005, Oldman starred as James Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, and then in the even more successful sequel The Dark Knight in 2008.
He has long established a cult following among film fans. Oldman is best known for playing the primary antagonist in a a number of popular motion pictures, which has seen him referenced in popular culture.
