Galen AD (c. 130 - c. 200) was a Greek physician ideas dominated Western medicine for almost 1,500 years.
Short Biography:
Born at Pergamum in Asia Minor, he personally attended the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Central to his thinking were the theories of humours (that human characteristics followed from the balance of the "humours" - phlegm, blood, choler and melancholy - thought to constitute the body) and the threefold circulation of the blood.
Galen made relatively few discoveries and relied heavily on the teachings of Hippocrates. He wrote a large number of books, over 100 of which are known.
