Gael Monfils (full name Gael Sebastien Monfils) was born on September 1, 1986, in Bobigny, France. He is the son of retired footballer Rufin.
He stepped into the world of tennis professional with his debut in the Dutch Junior Open of 2002. Gael came second in the championship and then participated in the German Junior Open and emerged victorious. His ranking reached 44 among junior tennis players worldwide at the end of the year.
The next year, he became No. 2 in junior ranks by getting his first ATP point. 2004 proved to be a great season for the tennis player and he became the top ranking junior player. Gael Monfils played in his debut ATP tournament that season and reached the quarterfinals. He won the junior championships of the Australian Open, the French Open and the Wimbledon an
d became the 2nd runner up at the US Open.
In 2005, Gael Monfils achieved bigger success. He won the ATP tournament for the first time in his career. He also won at a couple of other tournaments. This put in the 3rd rank in his country.
2006 saw Gael Monfils playing table tennis at a Las Vegas tournament. Eventually, Gael won that tournament. In tennis, he participated in the French Open that year and won against 8th seeded James Blake. The win throttled him to his highest rank in his career at No. 23.
Gael participated in the French Open, Australian Open, Wimbledon and the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. But he suffered from a hamstring wound and could not play in the US Open. The same injury continued in 2008 and prevented him from entering the Australian Open. He finally entered the French Open and reached the Semi Finals before being defeated by David Federer.
