Gabriele D'Annunzio was born on March 12, 1863 in Pescara, Italy as son of Francesco Paolo D' Annunzio and Luiza De Benedictis. He was a famous Italian poet, writer, novelist and dramatist.
Biography and Career :
He went to the best Italian High-school: Liceo Cicognini in Prato in 1874.
His debut was in 1879 at the age of 16 with "Primo Vere". Two years later in 1881 he became student of the University in Rome.
There were published in 1882 the volumes of poems "Canto Novo" and "Terra Vergine".
In 1883 he married Maria Hardouin di Gallese, a duke's daughter, and they had three children. In 1891 their marriage fell apart and published the volume of poems "Intermezzo di Rime".
It appeared in 1884 his first volume of prose "Il Libro delle Vergini" with obvious French inf
luences.
In 1889 it was published the first volume of a trilogy, "Il Piacere", in 1892 "All' Armata d'Italia" and in 1894 the third volume: "Il Trionfo Della Morte".
Gabriele started a love story with actress Eleonora Duse. He wrote many plays for her as "La Gioconda" and "Francesca da Rimini".
His admiration for Venice was expressed in 1895 in the poem "L' Allegoria Dell' Autunno".
Because D'Annunzio was active in political life he was named deputy for three years in 1897.
Between 1898-1899 he preferred theatre and wrote plays like: "la Citta Morta", "La Gloria".
In 1909 on Euripide, Seneca and Racine's marks Gabriele wrote a drama "Fedra".
Because he used to spend much more than he won he had debts and needed to move into France in 1910 where he had a great success.
In 1913 he wrote the play "la Pisanelle ou la Mort Parfumee" which was played immediately.
After the First World War started in 1915 he returned to Italy and even if he didn't had a job in politics he was the forerunner of the fascist ideology, the one who inspired the dictator with his worship for heroism.
In 1924 he published "Il Venturiero Senza Ventura" and "La Faville Del Maglio".
He was named the president of the Italian Royal Academy in 1937.
On the 1st of March 1938 he died in his house in Gardone. From Mussolini's orders there were organized national funerals.
