Frederick Douglass (c. 1817-1895) was an American anti-slavery campaigner.
Short Biography:
Born a slave in Maryland, he escaped 1838. His autobiographical Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in 1845 aroused support in northern states for the abolition of slavery.
After the Civil War, he held several US government posts, including minister to Haiti.
