Flavio Briatore was born in Verzuolo near Cuneo, Italy, in the Maritime Alps. He is born to teachers of an elementary school. After he failed twice in the public school he had to join a private school to get a diploma in Land Surveying at Fassino di Busca high school. He worked as a ski instructor and restaurant manager. After working as a ski instructor and restaurant manager he opened a restaurant "Tribula" which is his nickname. He became bankrupt because the restaurant didn't run well.
After closing down his restaurant he started working as an insurance agent. In 197
0 he went back to his native and he was appointed as assistant to Attilio Dutto, the owner of Paramatti Vercini Paint Company. This company was first maintained by Michele Sindona. On 21st March 1979 Attilio Dutto was killed in a car bomb attack by an unknown executor. After Attilio's assassination Flavio Briatore took over the business and made it his career.
He later shifted to Milan and worked in the Italian stock exchange. It was during this time that he met Luciano Benetton, the founder of the Benetton clothing company.
In 1979 when Benetton opened five stores in U.S. he appointed Flavio Briatore as the director of the group's American operations. By 1989 there were nearly 800 Benetton stores that were opened. Other stores owners starting complaining of competition from other Benetton stores, they closed down many stores and allowed only 200 stores to function.
Flavio Briatore was also the manager of two Formula One racing teams. From 2000 to 2009 he was the manager for Renault F1. From 2007 he has been the part owner and chairman of London's Queens Park Rangers F.C. In 2009 he was asked from the ING Renault F1 team because of his involvement in race fixing at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.
