Fernando Rivas was born in 1952 in La Habana, Cuba. He left in 1960, shortly after the Castro regime took power and grew up in Miami where he attended St.Michael's Parochial and Christopher Columbus High School from which he graduated in 1970. From 1970 - 1977 he attended the Manhattan School of music and then the Juilliard School in New York City, graduating from Juilliard with a Bachelor's in Composition. He studied in those years with Benjamin Lees, David Diamond, Ludmila Ulehla, Vincent Persichetti and others. He worked extensively as a radio, television and theater composer through the 1980's and 1990's winning two Emmys and one Grammy for his work on the children's show Sesame Street. Currently he works for Playhouse Disney on the show Handy Manny. He has also won the Princess Grace Award and Princess Grace Special Project grant for his work in theater.
