Moretti was born in Rio de Janeiro and he is the son of an Italian father and a Brazilian mother. When he was four years old he moved with his family to New York City and became interested in drumming. When he was 5 years old he started playing the drums and practiced in a soundproofed closet. As a teenager, he attended the Dwight School with fellow band members Nick Valensi and Julian Casablancas.
When he was 13 years old, he met his future band mates Julian Casablancas and Nick Valensi at the Dwight School in New York. He wanted to be an art teacher when he was in high school and went to college with a majo
r in sculpture. Soon he realized his extraordinary gift for drumming that could get him much further in life and dropped out of college to join the band.
Once in an interview, he said that he believes "marriage is not anything that will secure the future of your relationship," and therefore plans to "never get married". He is also a passionate artist; he has several patterns of his artworks at The Strokes' website, including a portrait of fellow band mate Nick Valensi. He is fluent in Portuguese. He plays drums for the hip hop artist Har Mar Superstar in his live shows.
