Eugen Ionescu

Eugen IonescuEugen Ionescu (known as Eugene Ionesco) was born on November 13, 1909 in Slatina, Romania. He was a famous French language writer originated from Romania.

Biography and Career :

Licensed in French at the University in Bucharest, his debut as a writer is during highschool in "Revista Literara", of the Sfantul Savu High school, in Bucharest.

His first writings were in Romanian language and they were published in Bilete de papagal Magazine, which was directed by Tudor Arghezi.

His first book is "Elegii pentru Fiinte Mici" (1931). He writes critical articles and personal impressions in "Un" (1934).

In 1941 he settled down in France. After ten years, he stars writing theatre plays.

His debut on t he French stage takes place in 1950 with "La Chantrice Chauve". At first it was difficult for him to be understood by critics, but he later became famous in French theatres.

"Les Chaises",
"Tneus sans Gages",
"Rhinoceros",
"Le Roi se meurt",
"La Soif et la Faim",
"Jeux de Massacre",
"Maccbett".

He also published fiction prose, essays, dialogues, and reflections upon painting.

Lucian Raicu says that "Ionescu was and is, by his writings and attitudes, a central conscience of the contemporary humanity". "Ionescu's theatre is the theatre of human condition". He is "obsessed" by a point from the depth in which tragedy and comedy, horror and laugh communicate the most natural way possible, have plenty of space, and changes each other’s places without no difficulty.
