Ernst Hoffmann Ernst Hoffmann (full name Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann) was born on January 24, 1776 in Konigsberg, Prussia. He is a famous Romantic author of fantasy and horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist

Biography and Career :

He started studying juridical science in Konigsberg University in 1792. after he passed with success an exam in 1796 he was sent to Glogau. He lived with his uncle Johann Ludwig Dorffer. His mother died in this period and after another exam he was sent to Berlin on the 4th of August.

In the same year, 1796, Hoffmann engaged with his cousin Minna Dorffer.
He was named assessor in Posen Law Court in 1800 and two years later he was advanced to counselor. In 1802 he broke the engagement with Minna and married Maria Thekla Michaelina Rohrer, a distinguished polish.

In 1803 he composed "Messe in D-dur" and "Klaviersonnate in As-dur".
Next year in 1804 he was transferred to Warsaw.

His daughter, Cecilia, was born in 1805 and he composed "Missa solemnis".
He got ill very bad in 1806, his wife and daughter too, and because he didn't have money he had to put an announcement in a newspaper to solicit a job as musical manager in a theatre.

In 1807 his daughter passed away.

Hoffmann was named musical manager in Bamberg Theatre and on the 1st of September 1808 he composed "Love and Jealousy". He also composed that year "Das Gelubde".

In 1809 Hoffmann started teaching lessons of music, one of his students was Julia Marc, a 13 year old girl. Hoffmann fall in love with her and his portrait would appear in his next works.

On the 15th of February 1809 appeared "Gluck Knight".

Hoffmann continued his musical activity in 1810 and in September 1812 appeared the story "Don Juan".

On the 25th of April 1813 Hoffmann left Bamberg and on the 26th of September 1814 he arrived in Berlin. There he got a job as counselor in the Supreme Court.
During 1813-1822 he wrote many works: "Berganza", "Magnetizer", "Undine", "Die Automate", "The Golden Pot", "Devil's Elixirs","Die Fermate", "Der Sandmann", "Nachtstucke", "Das Majorat", "Klein Zaches", "Serapio Brothers", "Miss de Scudery", "Kater Murr", "Principess Brambilla".

On the 25th of June 1822 E. T. A. Hoffmann passed away.
