Ernest Henry Starling (1866-1927) was a English physiologist who discovered secretin (which produces digestive secretions), and coined the word "hormone" to describe chemicals of this sort. Short Biography:
He formulated Storting's law, which states that the force of the heart's contraction is a function of the length of the muscle fibres.
Starling was Jodrell professor of physiology at University College, London. He is regarded, with OBayliss and OSharpey-Schafer, as a founder of endocrinology.
