Embeth Davidtz was born in Lafayette, Indiana. She is the daughter of John and Jean. Her father John was doing his chemical engineering at Purdue University when Embeth was born. Later her family shifted to Trenton, New Jersey and back to their native South Africa. Embeth Davidtz belonged to the English descent so she has to learn Afrikaans before she started going to school in South Africa. Her father took up the teaching post at Potchesfstroom University. In 1983 she graduated from The Glen High School in Pretoria. She has got a degree in Drama and English Literature from Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
Embeth started acting when she was 21 ye
ars old. She first acted with Cape Performing Arts now as Artscape in Cape Town. She played the role of Juliet for the stage play "Romeo and Juliet" at the "Maynardville Open Air Theatre". She used to do plays in both and English and Afrikaans. Being a bilingual actress she used perform local plays too like Stille Nag (silent night) and A Chain of voices. For both the local plays she was nominated for the South African equivalent of Tony Award. Her first movie was released in 1988 an American horror film.
In 1992 she shifted to Los Angeles after she met an agent in London. As soon she landed in Los Angeles she got a chance to do an American movie. Her first American movie was Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness". She also acted in Steven Spielberg's movie "Schindler's List" in which she plays the role of Helen Hirsch, a Jewish maid.
