Ellen Kathleen Pompeo was born in Everett, Massachusetts on November 10, 1969, to parents Joseph, a salesman, and Kathleen Pompeo. Ellen Pompeo is of Irish and Italian descent and was raised Roman Catholic, her grandfather being born in Gesualdo, a village in the Province of Avellino, Italy.
Her mother died when Ellen was four years old due to a painkiller overdose, and her father remarried soon after that. Ellen Pompeo has five older siblings, three sisters and two brothers and she was nicknamed “the pencil” and “stracciatella” which is ice cream with solid dark chocolate inside.
She served cocktails in Miami for more than two years where she met fashion photographer Andrew Rosenthal, with whom she was romantically involved for some time. In 1996, Ellen Pompeo was bartending at the
“So Ho Bar & Grill” in New York City's Upper West Side ,an agent approached her to appear in commercials and subsequently, she appeared in commercials for Citibank and L'Oréal. She began her career with minor roles on TV shows like “Strangers with Candy”, “Friends” and “Law & Order” and a handful of others.
Ellen Pompeo starred her first major role in the ABC medical drama “Grey's Anatomy”, which is now in its seventh season, as a surgical resident at a prestigious hospital named Meredith Grey. In 2007, Ellen Pompeo was nominated for a Golden Globe for “Best Actress in a Drama Series” and that year, she also signed a new contract for “Grey's Anatomy” that increased her salary to US$200,000 per episode.
