The romance started in December 2004 but it seems like they had something going on back in 2000 but didn't went for it. Of course, destiny brought them together at VH1 Big and the two became a happy couple although there is a big age difference between them (Portia is fifteen years younger than Ellen).
The fact that they were a lesbian couple with a big age difference and obviously the target of gossip didn't seem to disturb their happiness. They really wanted to get married but they wanted everything to be legal so when the California Supreme Court legalized the same sex marriage they went for it. After announcing their engagement on The Ellen DeGeneres Show the women started planning the ceremony.
The long awaited moment took place on 16 August, 2008 during a very private ceremony in Los Angeles. Portia's dress and Ellen's suit were made by Zac Posen. Everything was perfect since the rings were made by Neil Lane and flower arrangements by Mark's Garden.
Although their relationship was kept more in the shadows the two were sometimes seen together at celebrity events or speak about themselves and their relationship during a few occasions. We know now that they have three cats together named: Charlie, George Jackson, and Chairman Meow Tse-Tung and it seems like they want to be mothers too. An interview in US Magazine showed that they have thought about this option since they like children very much. I think that Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi adopting a child will definitely make a big fuss in the media, especially when the subject of gay/lesbian couples adopting is one of big debate.
When they first met in 2000 Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi didn’t started dating right away, actually they began dating a long time after their first meeting.

This out of the ordinary relationship began in 2004 although the two women knew each other since 2000. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi exchanged vows right after the same sex marriage was permitted in California.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi had their wedding on August 16.
