Biography and Career:

Elizabeth McGovern born in Evanston, Illinois is the daughter of Katharine a high school teacher, and William Montgomery McGovern, a university professor. Her family moved to Los Angeles where her father where her father accepted a position with UCLA. She is the elder sister of novelist and writer Cammie McGovern.

She started acting in plays while studying at North Hollywood High School. Joan Scott, an agent saw her performance in the play The Skin of Our Teeth by Thornton Wilder and recommended her to attend acting classes. McGovern learned acting first at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and then at The Juilliard School in New York City.

While studying at Juilliard in 1980 she got a chance to act in the movie" Ordinary People" which was her debut movie. In this movie she played the role of Timothy Hutton's girlfriend. This movie was directed by Robert Redford. In 1981 she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie "Ragtime".

After she completed her education as an actress at the American Conservatory Theatre and Juilliard School she started working in theatre plays. She first worked with off-Broadway and later in famous theaters.

In 1984 she acted in Sergio Leon's gangster epic "Once Upon a Time in American" and in 1989 she acted in "Johnny Handsome" as Mickey Rourke's girlfriend directed by Walter Hill and in the same year she acted in the movie "The Handmaid's Tale" a thriller movie directed by Volker Schlondorff. In this movie is played the role of a rebellious lesbian
