Eisaku Sato (1901-1975) opposed the policies of Hayato Ikeda (1899-1965) in the Liberal Democratic Party, and succeeded him as prime minister 1964-1972, pledged to a more independent foreign policy.
He shared a Nobel Peace Prize in 1974 for his rejection of nuclear weapons. His brother Nobosuke Kishi (1896-1987) was prime minister of Japan 1957-1960.
