I don't know that the word "deserves" is relevant; if what you're asking is whether he is a credible actor, the answer has to be ABSOLUTELY YES. But why take my or anyone's word for it? Watch him in an early role such as "Abre Los Ojos" or very recent "Transsiberian", and judge for yourself. In addition to his intuitive acting skill, he's hauntingly compelling. When he isn't in a scene, it becomes like a ghost town. That's something beyond acting, actually. But suffice to say, yes, the man can act.
