Dumitru Chioaru Dumitru Chioaru - poet. Also literary critic and essayist. Born on October 19th 1957 in Sîngatin (Sibiu) in a family of peasants, Dumitru and Maria Chioaru, later on workers.

He graduated in 1976 from “Gheorghe Lazar” secondary school in Sibiu and in 1980 from the Faculty of Letters (Romanian-French) of the “Babes-Bolyai” University of Cluj Napoca. As a student, he was a member of the group of “Echinox” literary review in Cluj Napoca. He made his debut in “Transilvania” literary review (no. 4/1976) with a selection of poems.

His editorial debut took place in 1982, after having won a competition organised by Albatros publishing house, with the volume of poetry Teenager Evening / Seara adolescentina. He contributed poems, literary criticism and essays to the followin g literary reviews: “Transilvania”, “Echinox”, “Steaua”, “Tribuna”, “Amfiteatru”, “Vatra”, “Romania literara”, “Secolul 20”, “Dilema”, “Contrapunct”, “Familia”, “Orizont”, “Poesis”, “Tomis”, “Apostrof, “Euphorion”, and others.

After his debut, he published the following books of poetry: The Century Ends in a Sunday / Secolul sfîrseste într-o duminica (Cartea Romaneasca, 1991); The Night of the Day / Noaptea din zi (Biblioteca Euphorion, 1994); The X-Rays of Time / Radiografiile timpului (anthology. Axa, 1998).

He compiled, together with loan Radu Vacarescu, The Anthology of Romanian Poetry from Its Origins to the Present Time / Antologia poeziei romanesti de la origini pîna azi (Paralela 45, 1998). His poems were published abroad in reviews, such as: “Exquisite Corpse” (1991, USA); “Lettres” (1992, Belgium);

“Halbjahresschrift” (no. 2/1994, Germany); “Si scrive” (1995, Italy); “NEuropa” (no. 86-89/1996, France). He was included in the anthologies Streiflicht. Eine Auswahl zeitgenossischer Rumänischer Lyrik (Dionysos Verlag, Kastellaun, 1994) and Gefährliche Serpentinen. Rumänische Lyrik der Gegenwart (Druckhaus, 1997), both in Germany. He received important awards, such as: the award for poetic debut of the Writers’ Union in Romania (1982); the “Aurel Dumitrascu” award of the National Festival of Poetry of Piatra Neamţ (1991).

He travelled to countries of the USSR (1981). to Bulgaria. Germany. Hungary. Belgium, and Turkey. At present, the author is a PhD lecturer of comparative literature at the Faculty of Letters of the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu and an editor at “Euphorion” literary review. He is a member of the Writers’ Union in Romania (1990), a member of the Association of Professional Writers in Romania - ASPRO (1997), and a member of Romanian PEN-Club (1997).

A number of critics have commented on his work, as follows: Nicolae Manolescu (“Romania literara”, no. 15/1982); Laurenţiu Ulici (“Romania literara”, no. 29/1982); Daniel Dimitriu (“Convorbiri literare”, no. 8/1982); Ion Bogdan Lefter (“Viaţa studenţeasca”, no. 47/1982): Traian T. Cosovei (in Starting from a Verse / Pornind de la un vers, Eminescu, 1990); Dan C. Mihailescu (“L.A. & l.”, no. 26/1991); Al. Cistelecan (“Vatra”, no. 8/1991); Nicolae Oprea (“Calende”, no. 10/1991); loan Holban (“Cronica”, no. 6/1992); Radu G. Ţeposu (in The Tragic & Grotesque History of the Dark Literary Decade, the Ninth / Istoria tragica & grotesca a întunecatului deceniu literar noua, Eminescu, 1993); Viorel Muresan (“Familia”, no. 6/1994).
