
Duffy (full name Aimée Anne Duffy) was born on June 1, 1984, in Nefyn, Wales.
Biography and Career:
Her parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Following this, she moved to Letterstone, Pembrokeshire, with her mother. She also has two sisters – Katy and Kelly.
There was no huge stock of music at her home. But, young Duffy gradually developed a passion for music, especially pop. She dropped out of school at the age of 15 to give time to her musical career. She relocated to Nefyn and crooned in some local bands. Later on, she joined the University of Chester to learn culture. In the meantime, she performed at Alexander’s, a jazz and blues club.
Two years later, when she passed the University and joined a Swiss music project. But it didn’t prove to be a successfu
l move and she came back to Wales. In 2003, she took part in a Welsh reality show called Wawffactor and became the runner-up. Following this, her debut album, an EP containing three songs, was released in 2004 under the label of Recordiau Awen. It became a hit in Wales. Along with this, Duffy also sang in a pair of songs by Mint Royale for the album “See You in the Morning" which was released in the same year.
During this time, Duffy continued sending out her demos to different labels, until she was spotted by Jeanette Lee of Rough Trade Records. Lee introduced her to guitarist Bernard Butler. The pair’s musical style matched and they started writing songs collectively.
Next, she signed up with A&M Records and released her debut English single “Rockferry" in December 2007.The track was designated as Single of the Week on Radio 1. During this time, Duffy also made a number of TV appearances in BBC. This was to promote her next upcoming single, “Mercy". When the song was released for download, it hit the top spot on the download sales charts. Two weeks later it was released on CD and vinyl. The single topped charts across Europe, including top ranks in countries like Britain,
Croatia and
Ireland.
Duffy’s next effort was her debut album “Rockferry". Released in March 3, 2008, the album became a smash-hit in the UK and
Ireland where it reached #1 on the charts. “Warwick Avenue" from this single was the third to be released as a single.
