Dixie Carter was born on May 25, 1939. She is an American actress.
Dixie Carter was born in McLemoresville, Tennessee. She grew up in Memphis. She attended college at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Later she graduated from Memphis State with a degree in English.
In 1960, she started her professional career a Memphis production of Carousel. In 1963 she moved to New York City and played a role in the production of The Winter's Tale.
She left acting and then she returned in 1974 after 8 years. After she came back she filled in for actress Nancy Pinkerton in One Life to Live. After that she starred in soap opera The Edge of Night. She played the role of assistant D.A. Olivia Brandeis "
Brandy" Henderson and appeared in the series from 1974 to 1976.
She took the role even though some advised her that doing a daytime soap might negatively affect her career but this was the role with which she was noticed. After playing in the soap opera she pursued her career prime time television roles.She also appeared in series such as Out of the Blue, On Our Own, and Filthy Rich.
Her role in Filthy Rich paved the way for her best known role in the television program Designing Woman. She played the role of Julia Sugarbaker in the series. It was set in Atlanta, Georgia. Her appearance in this show made her very popular. From 1999 to 2002, she portrayed Randi King on the legal drama Family Law. She played the role of a lawyer for the first time In 2004, she would later made a guest appearance on Law and Order: SVU, playing a defense attorney. She also starred in several Broadway musicals and plays.
She got famous again with her role in the television series Desperate Housewives in 2006 - 2007. She played the role of Gloria Hodge in the series.
She married Arthur Carter in 1967. They had two children Mary and Ginna. They divorced in 1977. She married George Hearn the same year and divorced in 1979. She married Hal Holbrook in1984.
