Dimebag Darrell was born on August 20, 1966. He was an American guitarist
Dimebag Darrell is the son of Carolyn and Jerry Abbott. When he was 12 he took up guitars and won a series of local guitar competitions, where in one he was awarded his first Dean ML.
He formed a band named Pantera with his brother Vinnie Paul in 1981. The band began in a glam metal style. By the late '80s showed a greater influence from thrash metal acts such as Slayer and traditional metal bands like Black Sabbath. Pantera's style came to fruition with their first album released in February 1992. The album was named Vulgar Display of Power. It saw the replacement of the power metal falsetto vocals with a hardcore-influ
enced shouted delivery and heavier guitar sound.
The band began to suffer due to tensions and fights between the band members in the mid-1990s. It was mainly due to vocalist Phil Anselmo's drug abuse. As a result the band broke up in 2003.
After a year the brothers Vinnie and "Dimebag" formed another band named Damageplan. They hired former guitarist Pat Lachman, and Bob Zilla. Damageplan released its first album New Found Power in 2004 in the U.S.
Just before vocalist Phil joined Pantera, Abbott was requested to join the thrash band Megadeth. Abbott wanted to join but on the condition that the band also hired his brother Vinnie. The band had already hired drummer Nick Menza so Abbott stayed with Pantera.
Abbott played guest guitar solos on several Anthrax songs.
Shortly before Abbott's death, he went into the studio with a band named Premenishen to do a guest solo on a track titled Eyes of the South. Mike Portnoy confirmed him as one of the original guitar player choices for Liquid Tension Experiment.
Abbott was shot onstage on December 8 2004. He was performing with Damageplan in Ohio. The gunman was Nathan Gale who shot Abbott five times, including once in the head, killing him instantly.
