Denzel was born and raised in Mount Vernon and he has an older sister. His parents divorced when he was 14 years old. Altough he wanted to study at Texas Tech University, Denzel ended up at Fordham University where he studied Drama and Journalism. He managed to finish his studies there in 1977 and got a B.A.
In the same year after graduating Washington made his break in professional acting with a role in "Wilma", a television movie. His big screen debut was made with "Carbon Copy" in 1981. His shot to fame came with a role in "St. Elsewhere" a very popular television drama, this was happenin
g in the 1982-1988 period.
He played in many movies and won 5 Academy Awards (3 nominations), 5 BET Awards (3 nominations), Golden Globe Awards (1 nomination) and Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
