Dennis Franz was born in Chicago, Illinois. He belonged from a German family. He is the son of Eleanor and Franz Schlachta. He studied at Proviso East High School and then went to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. After college he joined the U.S. and served there for 11 months.
He began his professional acting career at the Organic Theater Company in Chicago. He had previously starred as Shakespeare but due to his looks he got the roles of police officers very early in his acting career. Franz made guest appearances in various television series like The A- Team. He also starred in the television series, Hill Street B
lues. He played the characters of Sal Benedetto and Norm Buntz in the series. He also appeared in the series named Beverley Hills Buntz and played the character of Norman Buntz.
He won four Emmy awards for his role in the famous television series NYPD Blue. He played the character of Andy Sipowicz in the series and his character was ranked number 23 in the 100 Greatest TV Character list.
