David Russel Lange (1942-2005) was a New Zealand Labour Party prime minister (1983-1989).
Lange, a barrister, was elected to the House of Representatives in 1977. Labour had a decisive win in the 1984 general election on a non-nuclear defence policy, which Lange immediately put into effect, despite criticism from the USA.
He introduced a free-market economic policy and was reelected in 1987. He resigned in August 1989 over a disagreement with his finance minister.
