Son of a Nottinghamshire miner, Lawrence studied at University College, Nottingham, and became a teacher. He achieved fame with the semi-autobiographical Sons and Lovers, which includes a portrayal of his mother (died 1911).
In 1914 he married Frieda von Richthofen, ex-wife of his university professor, with whom he had run away in 1912, and who was the model for Ursula Brangwen in The Rainbow, suppressed for obscenity, and its sequel Women in Love.
His travels in search of health (he suffered from tuberculosis, from which he eventually died near Nice) prompted books such as Mornings in Mexico in 1927. Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1928 was banned as obscene in the UK until 1960.
