Corazon Aquino (Maria Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco-Aquino) was the President of the Philippines from 1986, when she was instrumental in the nonviolent overthrow of President Marcos.
Short Biography:
She has sought to rule in a conciliatory manner, but has encountered opposition from left (communist guerrillas) and right (army coup attempts), and her land reforms have been seen as inadequate.
The daughter of a sugar baron, she studied in the USA and married the politician Benigno Aquino 1956.
The chief political opponent of the right-wing president Marcos, he was assassinated by a military guard at Manila airport 1983.
Corazon Aquino was drafted by the opposition to contest the Feb 1986 presidential election and claimed victory over Marcos, accusing the government of ballot-rigging.
She led a nonviolent "people's power" campaign which overthrew Marcos 25 February. A devout Roman Catholic, Aquino enjoyed strong church backing in her 1986 campaign.
