
Constantin Brancusi was born on February 19, 1876 in Hobita, Oltenia Romania. He was a Romanian sculptor and one of the biggest sculptors of the XX century, that had an extraordinary contribution in renewing the plastic language and vision in contemporary sculpture.
Biography and Career :
Between 1884-1887 he studies in
Craiova at the Art and Vocational School., coming after that to
Bucharest where he finishes Belle-Arte School. In 1905 he gets in Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Beaux-Artes .
In 1907 Constantin Brancusi creates the first version of "The Kiss", theme which he will reengage under different forms, culminating with "The Kiss
Gate" located in Targu-Jiu.
In the same year he takes contact with the Parisian artistic avant-garde world, becoming friends with Guillaume Apollonaire, Fernand Leger and Amedeo Mondigliani. He has many exhibitions in Bucharest and Paris presenting his famous works "Great Birds", "Sleeping Muse", "Lady Pogany".
In 1940 Constantin Brancusi also exhibits in New York at Photo Secession Gallery, being very well received by the Americans. His works are collected by many rich people, among them- John Quin. He has many exhibitions in USA., France, Sweden, Holand and England.
In Romania in the so-called social-realist era Brancusi was disputed. Only in 1964 he was rediscovered here as a national genius.
From 1963 till today over 50 books and monographs were written about him and thousands of studies and articles establishing his place as a genius artist and even as one of the greatest creators of all times.
All of his famous works are located in Targu-Jiu, in Romania.
After he passed away in Mars 1957 in Paris, he was named member of the Romanian Academy. Constantin Brancusi was buried in the Cimetii¨re du Montparnasse, Paris, France.
