Claude Shannon Claude Elwood Shannon (1916-2001) was American mathematician, whose paper The Mathematical Theory of Communication in 1948 marks the beginning of the science of information theory. He argued that information (data) and entropy are analogous, and obtained a quantitive measure of the amount of information in a given message.
