Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer.
Short Biography:
He broke with the dominant tradition of German Romanticism and introduced new qualities of melody and harmony based on the whole-tone scale, evoking oriental music.
His work includes Prelude I'apres-midi d'un faune in 1894 and the opera Pellas et Melisande in 1902.
Among his other works are numerous piano pieces, songs, orchestral pieces such as La Mer 1903-1905, and the ballet Jeux 1910-1913. Debussy also wrote with humour about the music of his day, using the fictional character Monsieur Croche 'anti-dilettante' (professional debunker).
