Ciprian Porumbescu

Ciprian PorumbescuCiprian Porumbescu was born on October 14, 1853 in Sipotele Sucevei, Romania and died on July 6, 1883. He was one of Romania's most important composers.

Biography and Career :

Iraclie Porumbescu, an orthodox priest, was his father. His mother's name was Emilia. At first he used the name Golembiovski, then for a period of time Golembiovski-Porumbescu and finally Porumbescu.

He started studying music in Suceava and Cernauti and continued at Konservatorium fur Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna with Anton Bruckner and Franz Krenn. Because of his family's poor situation he couldn't continue his studies. Between 1873 and 1877 he studied orthodox theology in Cernauti.

In Vienna he leaded the Students Society's chorus "Romania Juna" and in 1880 had a collection of songs ca lled "Collection of Social Songs for the Romanian Students". The most important and beauty part of his artistic life came after this. On March 11, 1882 was the premiere of his opera "Crai Nou". Its huge success imposed its reappearance in the next two days.

He was one of the most famous composers of his era. The composer was arrested for his political activity and during this time he written his best operas. Among his works are "Rapsodia romana pentru orchestra", "Serenada", "La malurile Prutului", "Altarul Manastirii Putna", "Inima de roman", "Gaudeamus Igitur" and "Oda ostasilor romani". He was the composer of the Albanian anthem and in Romania this is a great patriotic song, "Pe-al nostru steag e scris Unire". He is also the author of Romania's old anthem, "Three Colors".

Way too soon, at only 29 years old, he died of tuberculosis in Stupca, Romania. This village is called today Ciprian Porumbescu.
