Chiang Kai-Shek (1887-1975) was a Chinese Guomindang (nationalist) general and political president of China 1928-1931 and 1943-1949, and of Taiwan from 1949, where he set up a breakaway right-wing government on his expulsion from the mainland by the communist forces.
Short Biography:
He was a commander in the civil war that lasted from the end of imperial rule in 1911 to the Second Sino-Japanese War and beyond, having split with the communist leader Mao Zedong in 1927.
Chiang took part in the revolution of 1911 that overthrew the Manchu Ch'ing dynasty, and on the death of the Guomindang leader Sun Yat-sen was made commander in chief of the nationalist armies in South China in 1925.
Collaboration with the communists, broken in 1927, was resumed in 1936, and Chiang nominally headed the struggle against the Japanese invaders, receiving the Japanese surrender in 1945.
In December 1949 he took refuge on the island of Taiwan, maintaining a large army in the hope of reclaiming the mainland.
His authoritarian regime enjoyed US support until his death. He was succeeded as president by his son Chiang Ching-kuo.
