Charles Steinmetz Charles Steinmetz (1865-1923) was an American engineer who formulated the Steinmetz hysteresis law in 1891, which describes the dissipation of energy that occurs when a system is subject to an alternating magnetic force.

He worked on the design of alternating current transmission and 1894-1923 served as consulting engineer to General Electric.
