Carlos Fuentes (born in 1928) is an Mexican novelist, lawyer, and diplomat, whose first novel La region mas trans parente / Where the Air is Clear in 1958 encompasses the history of the country from the Aztecs to the present day.

He received international attention for The Death of Artemio Cruz in 1962, Terra nostra in 1975, and El gringo veuo / The Old Gringo in 1985.
