She studied at the Shawnee High School in Medford. Her mother, Kay, was a high school teacher and her father, Ronald, was an executive at Kraft Foods.
She made her debut in "Guiding Light" in 1989. The role that made her famous was in the television series "Ally McBeal" where she had the main role. Other movies in which she was seen are "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her", "Bash: Latter-Day Plays", "The Last Shot", "Fragile" and "Brothers & Sisters".
