Burton Richter (born in 1931) is an American high energy physicist who, in the 1960s, designed the Stanford Positron Accelerating Ring (SPEAR).
Short Biography:
In 1974 Richter used SPEAR to produce a new particle, later named the "psi" particle, thought to be formed from the charmed quark postulated by Sheldon Glashow. Richter shared the 1976 Nobel Prize for Physics with Samuel Ting.
