Q:   Ask a Question about Bob Moses
Bob Moses Robert Moses was the "master builder" of mid-20th century New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County, New York. He was born on December 18, 1888 and passed away on July 29, 1981.

In the 1970s, New York was deteriorating. The city was on the almost bankrupt. Crime and unemployment were on the increase. Public parks and public housing were in deplorable conditions. New York City had become the symbol of the downfall which the entire country was facing.

Robert was the man most responsible for rescuing the city from its dredges. He shaped it into the urban landscape as it is seen today. He changed shorelines, built roadways in the sky, and transformed neighborhoods forever. Robert built 13 bridges, 416 miles of parkways, 658 playgrounds, and 150,000 housing units, spending $15 0 billion in today's dollars.

However, his works remain extremely controversial. His critics claim that he preferred automobiles to people, that he displaced hundreds of thousands of residents in New York City. One of his greatest failures was considered to be his housing projects. Robert spent millions and evicted tens of thousands to create buildings that later became centers of crime, poverty, and despair.

Why is he famous?

Robert Moses became famous as the the visionary idealist who gave New York Lincoln Center and Jones Beach, along with parks, roads, playgrounds and public pools. Robert was arguably the most powerful person in New York state government from the 1930s to the 1950s.
