Robert Paxton McCulloch was an American entrepreneur. He was born on May 11, 1911 in Missouri. He died on February 25, 1977.
Bob's grandfather, John I. Beggs, made his fortune by implementing Thomas Edison's electrical powerplants in cities around the world, manufacturing and selling electric trolley cars, and founding Milwaukee's public utility system. McCulloch, along with his two siblings, inherited his grandfather's fortune in 1925.
Bob graduated from Stanford University. Two years he married Barbra Ann Briggs, daughter of Stephen Foster Briggs. Bob started work with McCulloch Engineering Company, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There he built racing engines and superchargers. Later he sold the company to Borg-Warner Corporation for US$1 million.
He later changed his company's na
me to McCulloch Motors.
Why is he famous?
Bob first gained fame for his company McCulloch chainsaws.But Bob is most famous for having purchased the new London Bridge and moved it to one of the cities he founded, Lake Havasu City, in Arizona.
In 1962,it was discovered that the London Bridge was "falling down" . It had begun sinking into the Thames river due to the increase in traffic. The City of London hence decided to put the 130-year old bridge up for auction, and construct a new one in its place.
Robert P. McCulloch, founder of Lake Havasu City, AZ, submitted the winning bid for $2,460,000 in 1968. He then spent another $7million to move the London Bridge to Lake Havasu City which took a total of three years.
